Međugorje district is a part of Čitluk county, which is situated in the southern part of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided into northern teritory which belongs to Bosnia and southern teritory which belongs to Herzegovina. Međugorje district is situated in the southern part of Herzegovina. Herzegovina, which occupies the teritory of 9948 km2, is situated between two areas – in the north there is mountain area and in the south there is maritime area. In the east Herzegovina has the boundary with Montenegro, in the north and in the west with Bosnia and in the south and south-east with Croatia and with one part of the Adriatic sea surface. The biggest city in Herzegovina is Mostar which is the main cultural and administrative centre. The place Međugorje is one of the most famous catholic destinations in the whole world; it became popular because of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which started to appear as a religious miracle on 24th June 1981. The whole place is directed to religious tourism, the reception of the believers and their acceptance. Since 1981 the Međugorje is, next to Sarajevo the most visited destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a million believers coming from the whole world, all year round. Međugorje county today has about 4300 inhabitants, who mostly work in tourism, catering, trade and hotel business. The believers who come to Međugorje find their peace and their inner faith. The place where they come together is Saint Jakov's church which is at the very centre of the place.
