Plitvice Lakes National Park is mostly situated in Ličko-senjska county but there is also one little part of it situated in Karlovačka county. Plitvice Lakes are very special geological and hydrogeological karst appearance which was declared a National Park on 8th of April 1949, what makes them the oldest Croatian National Park. Besides being the oldest National Park, Plitvice Lakes are also the most visited, most developed and the biggest National Park in Croatia. Plitvice Lakes contain wooded mountain area with 16 crystal cyan-blue lakes of different sizes. Two biggest and deepest lakes are Kozjak and Prošće which together with 10 smaller lakes make the group of Gornja jezera. Downstream from lake Kozjak in a 70-80 m deep canyon there are Donja jezera. This is the first National Park in Croatia which was recognized by UNESCO and added to World Natural Heritage List. National Park marks the increased interest of visitors every year, predominantly in July and August when it is visited by more than 8000 people in one day according to some assessments. The number of yearly visits is also increasing and in year 2016 it has come to million and a half visitors.
